ML Engineer

An ML Engineer, or Machine Learning Engineer, turns machine learning models into maintainable systems. The role connects modelling with repeatable training, data pipelines, deployment and monitoring after release.

What does an ML Engineer do?

The scope depends on the product and team. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Prepare features and validation data while preventing leakage from future or target information.
  • Compare models with meaningful baselines and choose metrics that reflect the decision being made.
  • Package models for batch or online inference and keep feature processing consistent.
  • Monitor data changes and prediction quality, and support investigation, retraining and rollback.

Key ML Engineer skills to assess

Python; SQL; statistics; feature engineering; model evaluation; testing; version control; deployment. scikit-learn, PyTorch or TensorFlow may be relevant depending on the model family and platform.

Separate day-one requirements from skills a candidate can learn. Ask which decisions they owned and how they checked results. A technology listed on a CV does not establish hands-on depth.

A practical example of the role

For a customer-churn model, the engineer uses a time-based evaluation split and evaluates which customers the team can actually contact. A better offline score is useful only when the resulting intervention helps the business.

How this role differs from related positions

Data Scientists often focus on investigation and experiments. ML Engineers emphasise repeatable implementation and serving. MLOps Engineers build shared automation and infrastructure for the model lifecycle.

How to hire an ML Engineer

Define the work before starting the search: your existing system, delivery stage, expected ownership and who will review technical decisions. Align the seniority, working format and communication requirements with those responsibilities.

Use a relevant technical discussion or work sample to explore these questions:

  1. How did you prevent data leakage?
  2. Which business cost influenced your classification threshold?
  3. How did you keep training features consistent with serving features?

Look for a clear explanation of the candidate’s own contribution, trade-offs and lessons from unsuccessful approaches. Match the assessment to the actual role rather than relying only on tool names or a generic quiz.

Frequently asked questions

Does every ML Engineer need deep learning experience?

No. Tabular prediction, ranking or forecasting may require different methods. Hire for the data and production requirements of the role.

What should an ML Engineer job description include?

Include business context, core tasks, existing stack, expected seniority, reporting line and success criteria. Add the salary range, location or time-zone requirements and working format where available. Distinguish essential requirements from preferences.

Web Recruiters helps companies search for technical specialists across Europe, Israel, the USA, Canada and Latin America. A dedicated manager coordinates the search and feedback. Initial screening can cover English, salary expectations, availability, working format and agreed client criteria. The client normally makes the final technical assessment; additional technical interviews can be discussed separately.
