AI Agent Developer / Agentic AI Engineer

An AI Agent Developer, also called an Agentic AI Engineer, builds systems in which an AI model selects tools or steps to pursue a defined task. The role combines orchestration with explicit permissions and controls over actions.

What does an AI Agent Developer do?

The scope depends on the product and team. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Define accessible tools and data, plus actions that require human approval.
  • Implement validated tool interfaces and state management across multiple steps.
  • Add timeouts, retries, stopping conditions and recovery after incomplete execution.
  • Evaluate task completion, unintended actions, operating cost and difficult inputs.

Key AI Agent Developer skills to assess

Python or TypeScript; APIs; state management; asynchronous execution; tool calling; testing; access controls; tracing. Agent frameworks or protocols such as MCP may help integration but do not replace failure analysis and permission enforcement.

Separate day-one requirements from skills a candidate can learn. Ask which decisions they owned and how they checked results. A technology listed on a CV does not establish hands-on depth.

A practical example of the role

An assistant prepares a supplier request from approved information. A separate approval controls submission. The developer tests duplicate calls and ensures retries cannot accidentally create repeated requests in the supplier system.

How this role differs from related positions

A workflow follows predefined control flow; an agent can make some decisions about its next step. AI Automation Engineers may use either, selecting the simplest design that reliably completes the process.

How to hire an AI Agent Developer

Define the work before starting the search: your existing system, delivery stage, expected ownership and who will review technical decisions. Align the seniority, working format and communication requirements with those responsibilities.

Use a relevant technical discussion or work sample to explore these questions:

  1. Why did this task require an agent instead of a fixed workflow?
  2. How do you prevent duplicate actions after retries?
  3. Where are permissions enforced independently of model instructions?

Look for a clear explanation of the candidate’s own contribution, trade-offs and lessons from unsuccessful approaches. Match the assessment to the actual role rather than relying only on tool names or a generic quiz.

Frequently asked questions

Does agentic AI mean fully autonomous software?

No. Autonomy is a bounded design choice. Sensitive actions can remain behind approval, and an operator should be able to inspect or stop execution.

What should an AI Agent Developer job description include?

Include business context, core tasks, existing stack, expected seniority, reporting line and success criteria. Add the salary range, location or time-zone requirements and working format where available. Distinguish essential requirements from preferences.

Find the right AI Agent Developer for your team

Web Recruiters helps companies search for technical specialists across Europe, Israel, the USA, Canada and Latin America. A dedicated manager coordinates the search and feedback. Initial screening can cover English, salary expectations, availability, working format and agreed client criteria. The client normally makes the final technical assessment; additional technical interviews can be discussed separately.
