Computer Vision Engineer

A Computer Vision Engineer builds systems that interpret images or video. The role combines visual data preparation, modelling and deployment under the conditions where cameras, users or equipment actually operate.

What does a Computer Vision Engineer do?

The scope depends on the product and team. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Define visual annotations and check image quality and dataset leakage.
  • Build or adapt classification, detection, segmentation or tracking models.
  • Evaluate lighting, occlusion, camera differences and the consequences of errors.
  • Optimise deployment for the target device and monitor real-world input changes.

Key Computer Vision Engineer skills to assess

Python; image processing; deep learning; dataset annotation; evaluation; deployment; performance profiling. PyTorch, OpenCV and inference runtimes are possible tools. Edge devices introduce different resource constraints from cloud services.

Separate day-one requirements from skills a candidate can learn. Ask which decisions they owned and how they checked results. A technology listed on a CV does not establish hands-on depth.

A practical example of the role

A manufacturer wants surface-defect detection. The engineer agrees annotation rules, tests unseen production batches and distinguishes missed defects from false alarms that unnecessarily stop the line.

How this role differs from related positions

Computer vision generally interprets visual input, while generative AI may create images. Multimodal work can combine both, but production experience in one area does not establish expertise in the other.

How to hire a Computer Vision Engineer

Define the work before starting the search: your existing system, delivery stage, expected ownership and who will review technical decisions. Align the seniority, working format and communication requirements with those responsibilities.

Use a relevant technical discussion or work sample to explore these questions:

  1. How did you split near-duplicate video frames between datasets?
  2. What changed when the system left the laboratory?
  3. Which accuracy and latency trade-off did you make for the target hardware?

Look for a clear explanation of the candidate’s own contribution, trade-offs and lessons from unsuccessful approaches. Match the assessment to the actual role rather than relying only on tool names or a generic quiz.

Frequently asked questions

Does a strong benchmark prove a system is ready?

No. Evaluation must represent target cameras, environment and operating conditions, with a process for reviewing errors after deployment.

What should a Computer Vision Engineer job description include?

Include business context, core tasks, existing stack, expected seniority, reporting line and success criteria. Add the salary range, location or time-zone requirements and working format where available. Distinguish essential requirements from preferences.

Find the right Computer Vision Engineer for your team

Web Recruiters helps companies search for technical specialists across Europe, Israel, the USA, Canada and Latin America. A dedicated manager coordinates the search and feedback. Initial screening can cover English, salary expectations, availability, working format and agreed client criteria. The client normally makes the final technical assessment; additional technical interviews can be discussed separately.
